Interview: Photographer Meredith James
We poked our noses into photographer Meredith James’ world and she kindly welcomed us over to ask her a few questions. And brilliantly answer them, she did!
How did you develop an interest and pursuit in photography?
I’ve had an interest in Photography since high school when I took a photo class, I continued some courses at at college and took some photos of a friend for a project, I posted them and tagged her and one of her other photographers reached out to me inviting me to go to Balboa Park for a shoot with a few models. It was practically my first meet up but he took the time to bring his studio lighting and get a few experienced models, make up artists, and some other photographers to teach some of the tricks and ins and outs he had learned.
It was so inspiring that this man would take the time to teach people he had just met about this art. This was when I knew I wanted to become a part of the artist community and pursue a career in Photography and every single person I have met has been such a kind, caring, and fun individual that I can never see myself in any other career.
How would you describe your vision/style?
My style to shoot would be mainly fashion/lifestyle and I love using color in my work to emphasize the accessories or outfit of the model and picking a perfect location that matches the style of the outfit. I feel my style is finding the most creative way to display the style and emotion that the colors make you feel and love using many different locations such as beach, forest, desert, and cityscape. I also do some conceptual work, which is created to make the mind wonder and think. I don’t label what the work is about because I want to hear everyone’s opinions and what it means to them and how it they think and feel when they see it.
How did you come as far as you have?
I came as far as I have by constantly putting myself out there on social media and reaching out to as many models, stylists, and brands as I can to create great connections and in the process some amazing friends.
What has inspired you the most?
Seeing the entire community of work has been so inspiring because it pushes me to be more creative in my endeavors and to think outside the box, but also meeting everyone else who is behind the camera and getting to know them along with the models. Having the sense of community and how everyone is so selfless and willing to help others out to better each other.
Any awesome experiences being a photographer has brought you?
Being a photographer I tend to be a bit spontaneous and knowing others like me makes for some amazing experiences. It allows me to go see amazing things and capture such beautiful things. I recently went on one of the best trips to San Francisco with one of my new friends Emily and we drove through the night to see the sunrise in Big Sur to then get some great San Francisco coffee and see the sights while taking photos along the way.
It was only about 2 days but one of the best experiences. This is one of the many experiences I’ve had but one that will stay with me forever as we decided 5 days before to just pack up the car and hit the road to meet other creatives up there, we collaborated with another photographer and an SF clothing company.
What is your strongest motivation?
My strongest motivation is working towards being a Photographer for the rest of my life and to continue meeting new people and supporting others in their dreams and to constantly be surrounded by people with the same goals and aspirations that I have.
How do you determine how to shoot?
I see the models certain style and I pick a location that fits their specific style and then walk around the surrounding areas for some creative shots and also collaborating with local boutiques and brands.
What is a quote or something you were told that resonates with you?
“‘Every morning you have two choices: continue to sleep with your dreams, or get up and chase them.’”
